Design, Discover, Develop: Everybody Engineers at The Works

The Works Museum, an engineering museum located in Bloomington, MN, connected to approximately 60,000 young (K-6) engineers last year. While many of those young engineers came to the physical space of the museum most were reached through programming of the Works that brings engineering to the community. Program offerings include Family Engineering Nights at schools or community centers, special events like Tech Fest and She Engineers, and workshops for K-6 students and teachers. While each of these programs rely on museum staff, they also need volunteers excited about the joy of engineering with young people. Come to this presentation to learn about what the Works has to offer and discover to opportunities to strengthen our profession.

There is a popular misconception that patenting software innovations is prohibited in the United States. There is also a mistaken belief that “software patents” are unenforceable.
This Software Patent Presentation, as presented by Benjamin Edlavitch of Edlavitch Law PLLC, debunked these myths and provided practical approaches to procuring patents on software innovations as well as enforcing, defending, and monetizing such patents.
Ben is a USPTO registered patent attorney with unique technical backgrounds in the life sciences, software, and electrical and computer engineering. Also, with over 26 years of experience in the IT industry (8+ years as a software developer and 18+ years as an IP law specialist), Ben advises clients on complex commercial agreements and technology licenses. This includes counseling clients on open source software issues and other legal concerns associated with computing and e-commerce.

Dr. Carlo Sapijaszko is a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience in the field of education and technology. Currently serving as the Senior Dean at Strayer University, he provides clear and effective leadership to the College of Technology and Professional Studies. Dr. Sapijaszko’s responsibilities include conducting holistic evaluations of IT and Professional Study programs, ensuring curriculum alignment with standards, and maintaining partnerships at national, state, and local levels.
With a background as an IT Program Dean at Strayer University and Academic Program Director at Western Governors University, he has been instrumental in curriculum design, development, and support for IT and Cybersecurity degree programs. His commitment to excellence is evident through his efforts to align programs with accreditation requirements and industry standards. Dr. Sapijaszko’s journey in academia started as a Professor at DeVry University in 1994, progressing through various leadership roles such as Dean of Electronics and Computer Technology Program and National Senior Academic Specialist. His experience extends to the private sector, where he worked as a Hardware and Software Engineer at DE Labs and General Electric.
Education-wise, Dr. Sapijaszko holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida, a Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary, and a Bachelor’s Degree in the same field. In addition to his extensive professional experience, Dr. Sapijaszko is committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, evident in his recent certification in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy from Cornell. He has also contributed significantly to the academic community through patents, publications, and presentations at conferences.
A Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, Dr. Carlo Sapijaszko is a dedicated leader and educator, ensuring the success and excellence of academic programs under his purview.

Pi-hole is a Raspberry Pi–based open source project that operates as a DNS gateway for your network. It safeguards all devices on your network from unwanted ads and tracking while providing excellent visibility and control. This talk will describe the Speaker’s experiences and lessons learned from using Pi-hole on his home network.
Speaker Biography:
Eric Dunn graduated from Iowa State University in 1991 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He moved to the Twin Cities after graduation, and has worked on wireless network signal processing and ASIC development at local startups Nextnet Wireless, and Motorola. More recently he has worked on storage solutions and ASIC verification at Micron in Minneapolis. He is a member of the Communications and Solid State Circuits Societies. He has served as the IEEE Twin Cities Section Treasurer since 2016.

Jack Pope will be the debut speaker for the IEEE Twin Cities Section webinar series.
Jack will provide an overview of some of the clever ways that Forth-like compilers and interpreters are implemented. Forth is a procedural, stack-oriented programming language and interactive environment. The Forth language can be used to write general programs, including compilers for various languages. He will delve into at least one such implementation.
Professionally, Jack spends a great deal of time programming for system and statistical applications, database development, and distributed computing on UNIX/Linux systems. He also keeps busy as Chairman of the Twin Cities Section of the IEEE Computer Society and with teaching Computer Science in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Jack is the principal developer of epop, a Forth inspired programming environment.
There will be opportunity to ask questions and chat after Jack’s presentation.
