Jack Pope will be the debut speaker for the IEEE Twin Cities Section webinar series.

Jack will provide an overview of some of the clever ways that Forth-like compilers and interpreters are implemented. Forth is a procedural, stack-oriented programming language and interactive environment. The Forth language can be used to write general programs, including compilers for various languages. He will delve into at least one such implementation.

Professionally, Jack spends a great deal of time programming for system and statistical applications, database development, and distributed computing on UNIX/Linux systems. He also keeps busy as Chairman of the Twin Cities Section of the IEEE Computer Society and with teaching Computer Science in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Jack is the principal developer of epop, a Forth inspired programming environment.

There will be opportunity to ask questions and chat after Jack’s presentation.

The webinar is free but we would appreciate your registering for it here.

IEEE will be providing a PDH certificate for this webinar.

Eligible attendees may apply for 1 PDH (Professional Development Hour). For more information about IEEE certificates, please visit: https://www.ieee.org/education/credentialing/index.html

Lecture by Professor Gesualdo Scutari,  Professor with the School of Industrial Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturer on “Statistical Inference over Networks: Decentralized Optimization Meets High-dimensional  Statistics”.

There is growing interest in solving large-scale statistical machine learning problems over decentralized networks, where data are distributed across the nodes of the network and no centralized coordination is present (we termed these systems as “mesh” networks). This talk will discuss some vignettes from high-dimensional statistical inference suggesting new analyses (and designs) aiming at bringing statistical thinking in distributed optimization.

Starting on Friday, November 10, we will hold a monthly online gathering. You can drop in, drop out, rejoin, as you like, between 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Our intent is to provide a zero-stress hang-out where people can drop in and out according to their convenience, and get to know others with similar or different interests.

You will be able to talk and chat with your fellow members. If attendance grows over time (we hope!) we can organize break-out rooms for birds-of-a-feather sessions.

This is a social gathering and there is no cost for attending. However, we ask that you please register for the event so that we can run it smoothly.

Senior Member Elevation Event – September

The Twin Cities Section held a Senior Member Elevation Event on 23 September, 2023, to elevate qualified members to the Senior Member grade. Twenty-nine applicants and interviews participate in this online event. There was much interesting conversation and the attendees made useful contacts.

Signal Processing and Communications Societies Twin Cities Chapter Event

An online video talk on “Multi-Model Brain MRI: Current Developments and Future Directions” was delivered by Dr. Xi Peng from the University of Iowa on September 21. Please visit the Events and Activities page for more information.

Picnic – July

In July we held a picnic that was cosponsored by the Twin Cities Chapter of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and the Twin Cities IEEE Section. About 30 or so members attended and enjoyed food and conversation.

The Eden Prairie High School Robotics Team presented their First Robotics Competition entry. Some pictures taken by IEEE member Bruce Hanson are presented below and on the Events and Activities page.

Another Great Twin Cities Section Summer Picnic

The Twin Cities I&M Chapter along with the Twin Cities Section hosted another great picnic at the Emerson Automation Solutions pavilion. This picnic is held yearly and is a favorite event for many attendees. It features grilled food, a great robotics talk by Team 2502 from Eden Prairie, and a chance for IEEE members to network and have lively discussions. This year over 30 attendees came together to share a wonderful evening reconnect and share their common interests in the IEEE.
